Helping scientists transform elucidations into illustrations.

About the Artist

I'm Lindsay, a biologist and illustrator. Since I was old enough to examine and draw the fascinating insects in my backyard, visual arts and biology have propelled me.

A curiosity with insect- and plant- derived materials led me to take a multidisciplinary path to biological science and ultimately science illustration.

My undergraduate studies explored biomaterials engineering and entomology at Penn State University. Within this program, I led two course projects investigating caddisfly silk as inspiration for biomedical wet sutures, and testing various hydrogel chemistries for 3D printing cellular scaffolds and flexible electronics.

In addition to my coursework, I participated in three wonderful entomology internships: identifying macroinvertebrates to diagnose freshwater health, studying the spotted lanternfly’s impact on the grape industry, and assisting in the curation of dragonfly naiads at the Frost Entomological museum. These experiences reinvigorated my fascination with insects, their plant interactions, and a desire to study their biology.

With the intention of increasing my plant knowledge and integrating this with my background in entomology and biomaterials, I earned a Ph.D. in plant and soil sciences with Dr. Erin Sparks at the University of Delaware. My research involved applying mechanical testing strategies to maize brace roots and analyzing the mechanical implications of insect herbivory.

After illustrating my own doctoral work, I opened LindZeamays Illustration to manifest my dream of helping more scientists visuallly communicate their research.

My mission for LindZeamays illustration is to facilitate science communication for researchers and improve science literacy for the public. Accessible and engaging science facilitates interdisciplinary research, tackles global challenges, and saves lives.
